British Airways Business Class Review: New York (JFK) to London

Posted by

·

I’ve reviewed British Airways Business Class flights before, but always starting in Heathrow given I’m from England and it’s my normal start point. Whilst my recent trip to New York was no different, I’ve decided to review the return leg from JFK instead.

I love the fact that pretty much all the planes on this route have now been upgraded, and I think the Business Class offering is really strong. If you’re looking to fly between New York and London it’s well worth looking at, as often prices are cheaper than the American carriers.

This flight review is from flights taken in March 2025.

Turning up at JFK, all British Airways departures leave from Terminal 8. There is a separate Business Class check-in, located at the far end of the terminal. This check-in serves both British Airways and American Airlines passengers, as the two airlines run a joint operation out of JFK.

After checking in, you can take the fast track security line through to the terminal. There is a premier lounge (again for both BA and AA passengers) called the Greenwich lounge, just past security. The lounge is spacious and modern, having had a relatively recent refurb.

The main lounge area

To be honest, the lounge is so big with so many passengers it did feel a little overwhelming, but go a bit off the main path and there are lots of quiet spots to enjoy. There’s the main seating area as soon as you arrive, but venture further in to the lounge and you’ll find The Tasting Room (to sample multiple beers, or just sit and relax), a Cinema Area to watch sport, work rooms and booths (equipped with Macs) and even The Bridge Bar (for cocktails galore). None of these additional spots were busy.

The lounge food isn’t as good as in London Heathrow, but there is still a decent selection of hot and cold food, all complimentary. There is also every drink under the sun to enjoy – from wines, to gins, to cocktails and beers – you can start (or end) your holiday in style.

There are also plenty of shower and toilet rooms to choose from, so freshening up if you’re in transit or have a long flight ahead is quick and easy.

I really love the new BA business class product. No more front and back facing seats to squeeze more in – it’s now just four front facing seats on a row, all with access to the aisle.

The suites are also contained with privacy screens, and have multiple storage compartments meaning much more room to spread things out. In the old seats I was never able to put my book anywhere but on my lap; not anymore, I could pick from about 3 compartments!

Lots of legroom and fully extendable bed

The TV is built in so is much more seamless, and is all touch screen. The selection of entertainment is also brilliant, with everything from TV shows to Movies to Documentaries. As always I ended up watching Sports Documentaries – I can never help myself!

Also on offer is a lovely little White Company care package which includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, moisturiser, eye mask, lip balm etc. The bed extends to over 6ft and even my 6ft3 husband could fit easily. I honestly felt like I was in luxury in the sky.

The food on British Airways has definitely improved over recent years. On my flight I had a delicious carrot and coriander soup, a tasty spinach and ricotta lasagne, and an entire afternoon tea (consisting of three luxury sandwiches, a scone with jam and cream, a lemon tart and a chocolate éclair). I know, I know, I’m a big fat pig!

The selection of drinks is also always really good. I had a nice gin zing cocktail on the way out, plus bucks fizz to wake up to on the way home. All meals are served with still or sparkling water.

This was the area of the flight which let it down for me. Whilst I do normally enjoy the typical British-reserved service delivery, and I prefer to be largely left alone, the service on this flight was just a bit absent.

As an example, other than getting a drink for takeoff, and my food order being taken and brought to me, no-one checked on me once during the entire flight. There were multiple times I had to get up to go and ask for a bottle of water (and I found the flight attendants larking around eating mini egg cakes – I really don’t begrudge this, but maybe also check on your passengers).

I also had to wait over 45 minutes for my tray to be cleared after I’d eaten, despite putting my call bell on. It’s not the end of the world, but just annoying when you want to lay down and get some sleep.

In my seat – and in need of a hairbrush!

I always try to use my Avios points when flying with British Airways, or any other One World Alliance airline.

The return flight to New York cost me 136,800 Avios plus £380 of taxes for two people. Paying for this flight with cash would cost around £4,000 for two people.

This felt like really good value, given I normally collect around 400,000 Avios points a year via spend on my card and other bookings/flights, plus my husband’s work travel. We flew out on a Wednesday and came back on a Sunday, during off peak flight times in March.

I’ve yet to fly business class anywhere in the world, and it’s my dream to accumulate enough points for a good one! BA’s business class looks pretty, pretty good: the food looks delicious and the lie-flat seat sounds so comfortable (to be fair, any sort of lie-flat seat on an overnight flight sounds like heaven!). Mediocre service aside, it looks like a good experience flying across the Atlantic. I hope to get enough points to make business class a reality some day. Thanks for sharing your experience, Han! 🙂

Ahh I really hope you manage to accumulate those points soon. I think Emirates and Qatar are without doubt the best business class products in the market; but BA is a decent option with the new layout 🙂

Looks like they’ve made good upgrades. Since we retired, we’re in the back of the bus economy seats, but I did enjoy business class when we were still working. 😊 Maggie

They definitely have – it’s a much better product than the previous version. Ahhh, well I feel like economy products are always improving; we fly economy around Europe and some feel like what Premium Economy used to be!

An excellent review of BA Business Class Hannah. I’m glad they have removed those rear facing seats now.

We’re just a few days back from our trip to the Caucasus. The Paris to Detroit leg was European Business Class with lay flat seats (Air France doesn’t have First Class anymore). It was very similar to your experience (best storage I’ve seen in a lay-down compartment so far!) except that there was no privacy door, which didn’t bother me (I’ve had ones with and without). Oh, and of course, the food was French – ooh la la. I’m happy to report our service was very good. I’m sorry that didn’t happen on your flight. Given what those seats cost, regardless whether you’re spending points or cash, people in that class should be treated top notch. We had service a bit like yours on our Business Class flight from SE Asia – took forever to get a drink, that sort of thing. Anyway, we don’t fly at that level very often – we booked Premium Economy both ways, but months before the flight they changed the return journey airframe, and suddenly we were placed in Business class – score! It’s a totally different travel experience from coach. You actually don’t want the flight to end. We were stuck on the runway before takeoff for maybe 20 minutes and I was like, “Take all the time you need.” Then, while reclining and watching movies after the four-course dinner, I would catch a glimpse of how much of the journey was left and I literally said, “No! The flight is going too quickly!” When does that happen in coach? I’ll tell you when. Never.

Wow, so cool you were upgraded! That’s never happened to us! We fly business for any flights over 5hrs, and my husband is the exact same as you – the plane ride is part of the holiday!! I get so travel sick that I can never really enjoy flights that much. I am soooo excited to hear all about your Caucasus trip – I hope you had the absolute best time 🙂

This is a great review- although the service seems a little less than you would expect on that kind of flight.

Since Terry is a million mile member on Alaska Airlines and Alaska and British are partners, we enjoyed British Air business and first class on many flights. The service is always wonderful. That said, we’ve also taken many British economy flights, and they’re not enjoyable at all. I’m sorry to hear the service was not as great on your most recent flight. Excellent review, Hannah.

That’s so amazing that Terry is a million miler, so good for all the One World Alliance flights that can bring 🙂 Yes, BA economy leaves a lot to be desired!! (although it’s much better than some of the other UK carriers). Let’s hope the service is better for our upcoming flights!

We love business class and thanks to a lot of travel history we get to do it often. BA always gives mixed feelings, some things are great others can be mediocre, as you pointed out. I am a Million Miler on Alaska, which are partners with BA, my big complaint is that the taxes and fees when using points for BA are often three times as much as other carriers.

I loved the photos and the review, thanks

Ahh thanks Terry, and so nice to hear from you!! It’s so awesome you’re a million miler – Alaska is a great airline and so good to have access in to the full One World Alliance. Interesting on the BA points, I’ll definitely have to look more closely next time 🙂

It is just evidence that I spent a lot of time in coach to get those miles, now I like the comfort of business class when possible. We have done first on BA and business, I don’t think first is worth the extra miles etc.

I’d love to travel business class, but I worry that once I get a taste of it, it would be tough to go back to economy!! But it’s a great way to use points, especially when there are deals!

That’s exactly what happened to us; we now go business every time our travel time is >5hrs – but we are lucky we get a lot of points and are Silver/Gold members 🙂

Gin zing cocktail and afternoon tea on a plane? For me, that’s good enough reason to fly business class 😉.

I’ve found Business and FIrst service to be hit or miss. I’ve had some excellent flights over the last few years where the crew were central to it being highly rated. I’ve also had some pretty average flights, where they seem very disinterested. Probably my worst flight was in a near empty First cabin, where the staff member was pretty disgruntled with my request for additional food. It tends to be the older the crew, the better the service.
