The 10 most beautiful gardens in Singapore you must visit

·

I’m finally finishing my recent Singapore series, and I’m finishing with my favourite. Singapore is known as “The Garden City”, and it’s easy to see why. It’s full of green spaces and discovering them is an absolute joy. As an avid gardener, I knew that my recent trip had to focus on seeing all the incredible green spaces on offer, and I wasn’t disappointed.

In fact, they were just so beautiful, and made me such a Happy Hannah, that I had to write a post on my top 10 favourites!

  1. National Orchid Garden
  2. Singapore Botanic Gardens
  3. Jurong Lake Gardens
  4. Green Heart at Marina One
  5. Sky Garden at Capita Spring
  6. Sang Nila Utama Garden
  7. Raffles Garden
  8. Gardens by the Bay: Indoor Gardens (Cloud Forest & Flower Dome)
  9. Gardens by the Bay: Outdoor Gardens
  10. Hort Park
  11. Bonus: Jewel

The orchid has been the emblem of Singapore for almost 50 years now, and no-one does orchids better than this city. The National Orchid garden is a tribute to these wonderful flowers, and it’s situated within the larger Botanic Gardens (see below). It’s by far my favourite garden in Singapore.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens are vast, and offer much more beyond the paid National Orchid Garden. There’s far too much to cover in one paragraph but there’s everything from waterfalls, to lakes, to formal gardens, herb gardens, arboretums and so much more.

One of my absolute favourite hidden gems is the stunning Jurong Lake Gardens, home to a Chinese Garden, Japanese Garden and Lakeside Garden. The Chinese Garden is home to a six storied pagoda, and 2 smaller pagodas right on the water’s edge, plus there are water lily ponds galore and even bonsai trees. It’s beautiful!

An urban garden, set in the middle of residential flats, is absolutely breathtakingly beautiful. Stroll the walkways and take in the indoor waterfall; a perfect urban oasis. This spot is still relatively off the beaten track, so visit whilst you can!

Cost: Free, but advance reservation required via the website.

One of Singapore’s newest attractions is the stunning Sky Garden at Capita Springs, serving some of the best views in town, and home to a number of eateries. Again it’s in a residential complex, and is closed during certain times of the day for residents only. I recommend visiting when it opens at 8.30am to have it to yourself!

Set within Fort Canning Park, the Sang Nila Utama Garden is just stunning, like something out of Tomb Raider! The garden is in honour of the Srivijayan prince who discovered Singapore back in the late 1200s, and it feels like being transported back in time to the ancient temples of South East Asia.

Also located in Fort Canning Park is Raffles Garden, a reflection of Sir Stamford Raffles who landed in Singapore and was the founder of Britain’s Colonial era in the city. He was a keen Botanist, and did a lot to understand the species around him in the tropics. This garden is a collection of flora and fauna he studied.

Gardens by the Bay have recently been voted the 8th best tourist attraction in the world, and it’s easy to see why! The Cloud Dome is home to one of the world’s tallest indoor waterfalls, and it’s truly spectacular to see and then climb up inside. The Flower Dome houses themed floral displays – on my last visit in the spring it was “Tulip Mania”. These gardens are a must see for any first time visitor to Singapore.

Gardens by the Bay isn’t just the two famous domes, it also houses a number of outdoor gardens and lakes, themed and providing lovely views our across Singapore. My favourite is from Dragonfly island boardwalk to Marina Bay Sands hotel, as well as the famous Supertree Grove made up of numerous futuristic “trees”.

And the famous Super “Trees”

You can read my full guide to The Southern Ridges & Mount Faber: HERE

Hort Park is another off the beaten track destination, perfect for combining with the nearby Canopy Walk, Henderson Waves or Mount Faber Peak. It’s one of the growing gardens for Gardens by the Bay, but has lots to explore in its own right, including some beautifully laid out mini gardens and a perfectly landscaped main lawn.

You can read my full guide to Singapore Changi Airport: HERE

Cost: Free

Whilst Jewel isn’t technically a garden like the others on this list, it’s surrounded by beautiful greenery and walkways and is not to be missed as you head back to the airport for your onward flight. It’s situated just outside Terminal 1 and is land side (i.e. visit before you go through immigration). It’s the perfect end to a visit to the “Garden City”.

What do you think of all these gardens? Have you been to any of them yourself, or would you like to visit any of them? I hope you enjoyed my tour and if you’re planning a trip to Singapore, enjoy the garden city!! Stay safe and happy travelling.

Thanks Terry – and I agree! When I visit my husband out there on work I often just take a book to one of the gardens for a morning or afternoon and sit and read. That in itself is reason to go 🙂

Sounds good, but I think you should get a small sketch pad and watercolors etc, but then again I am TheTravelsketcher. I would love capturing some moments there, so thanks for the inspiration.

All very gorgeous! I’ve only been to GBTB and The Jewel, and I had no idea that Raffles had its own garden! Singapore is such a lush country– having come from a dry desert like Los Angeles, it’s such a huge contrast! Thanks for sharing, Han 🙂

I think all the lush green gardens are part of what makes Singapore so special for me 🙂 You can be in an urban oasis and in 5 minutes be in tranquil green gardens! 🙂

Lovely. We’re going to.book again for the Capital Spring sky garden as we had tickets last time but couldn’t go out on to the top as they were doing essential maintenance.

When Singapore said they wanted to be a garden city, the really meant it. Look at the amount of green space and beautiful gardens this city has today! Of all the places you listed here, the botanic gardens and the orchid garden are on top of my wish list.

It’s amazing isn’t it! I love how they have made the country so modern, but still retained so much green space. It’s part of the reason why I love it so much 🙂

Singapore has so many wonderful gardens and you’ve seen so many. The Botanic and Orchid were my favs too, but I haven’t seen nearly as many. I’m not sure why, but I wasn’t taken by Gardens by the Bay like so many others have. I completely forgot about Raffles Garden, although I mostly remember trees. I’ll put Sang Nila Utama and Jurong Lake on my list though. Great list Hannah, Maggie

I’m with you on GBTB Maggie; of this list they would be nearer the bottom than the top. I was very taken with the Orchid Garden and Jurong – much less crowded and curated 🙂

They all look so beautiful, Hannah! I love places where, beside the sprawling urban patchwork of skyscrapers, HDB flats, and the daily hustle and bustle contribute to life in the city, there is also a plethora of tranquil gardens for a flowery respite. It is quite obvious that ever since the idea to turn Singapore into a ‘Garden City’ was introduced, the city-state has worked hard towards creating an abundance of lush greenery to make life pleasant for all its inhibitors. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Thanks so much Aiva, it’s really amazing how Singapore have balanced so much modernity and high rise, with beautiful open green spaces. I think they are a blueprint for it; the city’s post WW2 transformation is nothing short of spectacular! xx

I went into this post certain I’d be able to determine a favorite, but I’ve failed. They all look so amazing. I must say, though, that the “windows” at Sky Garden at Capita Spring look remarkably like bowling pins!

That did make me laugh, now you say it, I couldn’t agree more! I have to pick the orchid garden as my favourite as it’s just so unique, but Jurong is a close second. Surprisingly I’d say GBTB (the most famous) is lower down the list.

I’m a huge fan of gardens. Given that there are at least 10 beautiful gardens, I’m fully convinced we need to visit Singapore. It’s amazing how many of these gardens are free.

I love gardens and I must say, Singapore’s gardens are in a league of their own. Just wow 😲. I have never been to an orchid garden, and botanical gardens are one of my favourite places to look for when we’re in a city. How beautiful is that ‘sunken garden’ in the Jurong Lake Gardens – it’s so unique … but then again, you might say that about each of Singapore’s gardens. Beautiful post Hannah – it’s not just you who is happy!

This is super useful and sounds like heaven for someone obsessed with gardens like me, so thanks for sharing Hannah. 🙂 Based on what i’ve read it looks like it can offer plenty of attractions for an actual holiday. Would you recommend Singapore as a destination itself, not just a layover?
