Review of The W Hotel, Edinburgh

The W Hotel, Edinburgh is a bold architectural statement—it’s set in a very distinctive building known affectionately as “the golden turd” (it’s meant to be a ribbon). Don’t let that put you off though – its modern rooms, food & drink options, spa and wellness offerings, music‑centric amenities, and panoramic terraces make it a great option for visitors seeking a memorable stay in the city.

I enjoyed a 6 night stay at The W back in June. It wasn’t perfect, and there were definitely some areas of improvement, but overall I would recommend it to anyone looking for something unique.

You can read my full post on Edinburgh HERE.

The W is located in Edinburgh’s St James’ Quarter, right in the heart of the city. On the doorstep to Calton Hill, it’s perfect walking distance for sight seeing in both the Old Town and the New Town (Edinburgh Castle and Holyrood Palace in just 15 minutes, Dean Village in just 25 minutes).

Calton Hill Edinburgh
The hotel is situated at the bottom of Calton Hill

The hotel itself sits cosily in St James’ Place, and is attached to a large shopping centre offering lots of tasty restaurant options right on the doorstep. I can particularly recommend Bloom & Wild Market as a perfect lunch spot.

The accommodation is modern, with an elegant feel. The room was clean and spacious, with a huge king size bed, comfortable seating area, and lots of space. It also had doors opening on to a small balcony for some air, which was nice to have, though the view was of flats so not picturesque.

The room and wardrobe space

The sink area of the bathroom backed on to the bed and was open plan, with a large enclosed shower and toilet both with doors to close away from the main space. I didn’t love the bathroom area, but it made good use of the space. A number of toiletries were also provided free of charge, including toothpaste, toothbrush, shower caps, mouth wash and hand cream.

Room service was a little haphazard. On some days I had water replenishment, on others I didn’t. On some evenings I had turn down service, on others I didn’t. When I did get turn down (2 nights out of my 6!), I was delighted that shortbread was provided in addition to the water, and that the most cosy slippers were also laid out. Perfect after a busy day!

I also found the rooms really noisy at night. I’ve never had it before where I kept waking up genuinely thinking someone was breaking in to my room. They weren’t – it was just hotel employees walking along the corridors. I think all the doors are fire doors and they were just slamming all night. It wasn’t ideal when I was working and needed to be up early on interrupted sleep, but sadly it happened every single night!

The hotel offers four options for dining, all of which are set in statement looking curved restaurants with wonderful views.

SUSHISAMBA (10th floor): The first in Scotland, offering fusion fare—Japanese, Brazilian and Peruvian cuisine like wagyu gyoza and lobster‑mango sushi. I had one meal here and it was delicious but pricy.

W Lounge (11th floor): All‑day dining with Gaelic‑inspired dishes, highlighted by spectacular 360° vistas out across the city. This was my favourite spot to come back to and finish up my emails with a drink and a view. The staff were brilliant and really friendly.

João’s Place: A cozy speakeasy bar styled on São Paulo 1968, serving creative cocktails and intimate ambience, again with a balcony area. I came up for a drink one night and it felt cosy and relaxed.

Rooftop W Deck: An outdoor terrace with wrap‑around views—heated igloos make it weather‑proof for any time of year, and the huge comfy sofas are perfect for day time or evening drinks if the weather is nice.

I did come up here twice during my stay. On my first visit I was in a nice dress and heels after work and had a good experience, but on the second time I didn’t have my hair and makeup done, and honestly was made to feel a bit unwelcome – it seems to the *the place* to be seen – and as I didn’t fit their aesthetic, I felt I wasn’t prioritised and had to wait 40 minutes for a coke and was then ignored.

The glorious rooftop

The main attraction beyond the restaurants of the hotel is the incredible AWAY Spa (5th floor), featuring elemental treatment rooms (Water, Fire, Earth, Air), including the UK’s only sand-bed “Earth” experience (though it’s very pricy at £180/hr). The spa even won “Spa Treatment of the Year” in 2024. Whilst I did go in the spa, the prices meant I just couldn’t justify a treatment.

Also on site is a Gym, open 24/7 with TechnoGym equipment for cardio, functional and strength workouts. No-one will be surprised to know I didn’t go in.

Uniquely to a hotel, there is also a W Sound Suite, a professional recording studio—the first in the UK—geared toward DJs, podcasters and musicians. Given I’m an accountant, you’ll be shocked to hear I didn’t go in there either.

I also feel the need to give the Lifts an honourable mention; because they borderline constitute an experience in themselves! Sadly I only took photos in my casual clothes as I popped out after work for food, so I’m not displaying them to their best. I can’t tell you the amount of times I found women draped in them in heels and dresses for photos. When one of them asked me to get out of the lift so I wasn’t in the way of her photo, I could do nothing but laugh.

So what did you think of The W Hotel? It’s definitely a bold and exciting new hotel, and one I’m glad to have stayed at. The panoramic views from the numerous bars are truly unique and beautiful.

That said, I do think it’s a bit style over substance, and it is expensive for the service actually received. I much prefer a low key luxury hotel where privacy and kindness are prioritised over selfies and pretentious attitudes. Plus, it really does look like a certain emoji from afar, towering over the Edinburgh skyline – I can’t work out whether I like its design or not! What do you think?

Stay safe and happy travelling!

Thanks for reviewing The W Hotel! It looks very beautiful and with great views of Edinburgh and amenities, but I’m with you on the service, which honestly sounds elitist. I’m ver much a comfort gal, and while I wouldn’t parade around a hotel lobby in PJs, I definitely don’t want to dress to the 9s, either! But overall, staying at The W Hotel looks like it was worth an experience 😍

It did feel a little bit like that, I agree. As you can see, I’m often a jeans and jumper kind of girl, so I didn’t always feel the most welcome! The views, modern room and unique design were an experience though 🙂

Great post, the hotel looks awesome, thanks for sharing.

The Golden turd is a sight for sore eyes for sure, I am old enough to remember the old St James Centre, it was an absolute dive of the highest order! However, you were almost certainly guaranteed to bump into an array of unique characters in there 😂

Oh wow, what a change to the area to go from the old run down centre, to a massive golden turd!!! Thanks for stopping by Tyler, have a great weekend 🙂

To be honest, I probably wouldn’t have thought of that emoji if you hadn’t mentioned it, but now I can’t unsee it! 😂 Too bad about the inconsistencies. I’ve been in hotels like that – kind of inexplicable. Really cool elevator, though!

Yeah, it was a bit of a weird stay – in some parts lovely, in other parts, cold. The design is definitely….unique!

Scotland was the first international trip I planned so it holds a special place in my heart. I’m a light sleeper so that noise would really bother me. The room looks very nice and I always love when the bathroom has a lot of counter space.

What an interesting hotel, I’m not sure it would be for me but I’d be happy to spend a night or two there to check it out. It does appear to be more style over substance though unlike the wonderful Balmoral!

I think they missed a little with the design because it does look like a certain emoji from a far…the golden ribbon is certainly lying preferred over the golden turd. But besides that, the place looks very modern and conveniently located. 🙂

It really does, such an odd design choice. And yes, it’s definitely modern and in a perfect location 🙂

Excellent review, Hannah. I can’t believe the women asked you to step out of the elevator so they could get a photo; so rude. I don’t think this hotel is for me though, since I’m a jeans and trainers type person. I probably wouldn’t get very good service. Thanks for sharing!

Honestly – people can be absolutely ridiculous can’t they! Well as you can see from the lift photos…so am I, so I didn’t feel the most valued guest, that’s for sure!

They certainly can be, and often are! I like your photos in the elevator; they’ve captured the uniqueness of such a common, everyday device.

Hmm, not a fan of the ribbon (?) design, and I’m not very tolerant of noisy hotels so not sure I’d stay there, but maybe I’d go for dinner. Maggie

Nope, not my place or space at all. I can’t stand pretentiousness and I am sure I could many other things to spend my hard earned cash on…especially with our exchange rate! 🙂 Thanks for the review, Han and now I know where not to go! 🙂 Mel

No I agree – this was a work trip so it was fine, but if I was going on a visit myself, I wouldn’t choose to stay here! You can definitely find better for your hard earned money 🙂

I nearly spit out of my tea when I read the part about how the W Hotel is known as the golden turd. That’s hilarious. The rooftop deck looks nice. Not cool that you didn’t feel welcome on your second visit when you weren’t all dressed up though.

This is such a wonderful review, Hannah. Once the hotel was opened, I had to look up  New Eidyn apartments in it, and they are all quite divine, just like a hotel. You know, it took me a while to get used to the W Hotel, with its signature ribbon architecture and its distinct, egg-shaped structure, but it is a bit better than the old, rundown shopping centre that was seen as an “eyesore” due to its 1970s Brutalist architecture. I think the biggest criticism was about the project benefiting from £61.4m of public money from the Scottish government and Edinburgh City Council. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

It’s too bad about the noise and the poor sleep. For an expensive location like this, you’d expect a very quiet experience. That’s a great rooftop view, at least.

Oh THATS what that was! I was wondering but forgot to look it up on my visit. It’s certainly a unique looking building 😂

Interesting about the turndown service, but I’ve noticed that post-lockdown a lot of hotels have transitioned into room service every 2-3 days unless requested otherwise- I wonder if that’s what happened but they forgot to tell you?

Also what a spectacular lounge area! I’d spend all my time there for sure.

Yeah, that’s what it was! It’s such a weird design choice!! And I agree on the turndown service, it definitely seems less predictable nowadays.

The bed looks comfy, and I like the toiletries, but with the expensive spa (at least for me with my South African currency) and noise through the night, my only highlight would have been the shortbread (2 out of the 6 nights 😉). And I will have another issue here … I don’t like wearing makeup and I can get quite impatient if I have to wait long for a drink!

I think that spa is extortionate in any currency – madness on the pricing!! Shortbread for the win, always 🙂

Great location, while the room itself looks really spacious and comfy. I also really like the look of João’s Place. The noise is unforgivable, I feel the staff should really know better than to slam doors in the middle of the night. The shape of the hotel is really unfortunate, ha ha.

I agree on the night time noise – it’s fine, but not when it’s meant to be a 5* hotel with a 5* pricetag c’mon! And yes the design….what on earth were they thinking!?

Ahh, the golden jobby! Haha. I’ve heard mixed reviews of the W… it does look quite nice and modern, and those views are fantastic! That sucks about the service on the rooftop though. Also I can’t believe you were asked to get out of the lift!!! Like if that were me, I would have waited for you to get out and then gone back up in it or something. I don’t understand what goes through people’s heads any more! They are cool lifts though. 🙂 I think the lifts in the actual St James’s Quarter are similar.

Btw you mentioned a place for lunch – it’s Bonnie & Wild, not Bloom (the flower place). I have to correct myself almost EVERY TIME I type that, hahaha.

Yeah it’s definitely a mixed experience, lots of good things but almost trying too hard. I know, the lift lady made me laugh, I mean honestly!!! Omg, that’s so funny, that’s just habit as I typed as I order flowers from there, thanks for pointing it out!!! 🙂
