Travelling Han

After a short layover in Thailand, it was time to fly to Vietnam. Flying from Bangkok to Da Nang might only take around 90 minutes, but my recent experience proved that even short-haul flights can feel pretty special. From the moment we checked in to the final descent over Vietnam, the entire journey was polished, comfortable, and surprisingly indulgent. If you want to experience Business Class with Emirates but don’t want the long haul price-tag, this is a perfect way to do it.

Pre-Flight Experience

Check-in at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport was smooth and efficient. The dedicated business class counter made the process effortless, and the private security line meant we were through security and immigration in minutes.

With time to spare, we headed to the airport lounge. We had access to the Emirates Lounge, but it was in Concourse G (to which we would have to take the train), so we actually visited the Qatar Airways lounge, using our Gold Member status with them. It was a beautiful lounge with a good selection of food, and after a long day exploring Bangkok, it was also nice to be able to have a shower before boarding the plane.

Boarding the plane was also smooth and easy, with a dedicated business class desk at the gate, and separate entrance to the plane, which we were allowed straight through.

Cabin and Seating

On board, the business class cabin was arranged in a 2-3-2 configuration—spacious and airy for such a short route. We had the cabin to ourselves, save around 4 other people (there were 44 seats in the business class section). The leather seats were wide, with generous legroom and a deep recline. The seats even went all the way to lie-flat, which is unusual for a short haul business class product (I’m looking at you, BA). The crisp white linens and pillows also added a touch of luxury.

A refreshing welcome drink (champagne, juice, or water) was offered right after boarding, followed by a friendly greeting from the crew, who addressed passengers by name—a small but personal touch that stood out for me. There was also a huge range of in-flight entertainment, though I just slept. Our flight had been delayed by almost 2hrs and it was 11pm at night, so I was quite tired.

In-Flight Dining

Despite the short flight time, the meal service was impressively well-executed. Shortly after takeoff, the crew served a hot meal – chicken and noodles. I thought the food was the weakest part of the service; whilst OK, it definitely wasn’t one of the best in-flight meals I’ve ever had.

The drinks menu included wine, beer, soft drinks, and freshly brewed coffee. I had a lovely glass of white wine with my meal, and my husband was on the G&Ts (I’m sure he had quite a few whilst I was sleeping!).

Service and Comfort

The crew were outstanding—attentive, warm, and genuinely kind without ever feeling rushed. They balanced professionalism with charm, checking in frequently and ensuring everyone was comfortable. Even though the flight was short, I felt well cared for from start to finish.

The cabin atmosphere remained calm and quiet throughout, with smooth lighting transitions and soft background music. Combined with the comfort of the seat and the quality service, the entire experience felt much longer (in the best way possible).

Overall, for a flight under two hours, this was an exceptional business class experience. The service, food, and overall comfort easily rivaled some long-haul flights I’ve taken.
