NFL Game Experience: Bengals vs. Cardinals

It was August 2025 and Mr Travelling Han (MTH) and I were talking about the NFL season, slightly tipsy in a bar in London. We realised that my NFL team (the Arizona Cardinals) and MTH’s NFL team (the Cincinnati Bengals) were playing over Christmas, AND we were already on leave from work, planning to lounge around at home in the festive break for a few days

I always seem to make drastic purchasing decisions when I’m tipsy (“oh we only live once” etc). So we booked the tickets and flight, to fly on 26th December!

And with that, instead of spending Boxing Day with our families, we hopped on a plane from London to the Queen City. Game Day turned out to be one of my best travel days ever. It was so much fun. So let’s go to a Cincinnati Bengals game!

Want to read more about Cincinnati beyond the Bengals? Read my full itinerary HERE.

You might be wondering why two Brits are so NFL mad. Well, blame Netflix.

I got in to football of the American kind in 2016. My Dad is a Dolphins fan and growing up I remember him staying up very late for the Superbowl. When a documentary came on Netflix called “All or Nothing” following the Arizona Cardinals of the NFL, I decided to watch it to learn a bit about it. And I was hooked. From 2017-2022 I’d sit watching NFL every Sunday evening in bed whilst MTH had his weekly Xbox gaming night with his friends downstairs.

Then one night, in 2022, I was watching the AFC championship game (Bengals vs. Chiefs). MTH was poorly, so he was just sat on the sofa with me instead for the evening – and it was probably the BEST game I’d ever seen. The Bengals pulled off an incredible overtime win to reach the Super Bowl (which they sadly then lost). Now MTH was hooked too.

Since then, every Sunday is football Sunday, plus we’ve also been to the London NFL games 3 times.

It’s safe to say that the NFL games in London, whilst amazing, aren’t a patch on my experience of a Bengals Game Day. Kick off was at 1pm, so we headed to the stadium at 10am to soak it all in. We bought lots in the pro shop, then walked to the riverfront to join in a tail gate. There were lots of drinks, music, food and a great atmosphere.

I was the only Cardinal in a sea of Bengals but was made to feel very welcome, helped by my sign. We were told multiple times our accents were amazing and I think we were the only non Americans there. We also spent some time in the bars along The Banks, which connects the Bengals football stadium to the Reds baseball Stadium. It was such a good vibe and we enjoyed the atmosphere a lot.

We also soaked in the Bengals themes. The home stadium is nicknamed “The Jungle” so there are lots of jungle themed bars, cocktails and colours. The chant is “Who Dey” (which continues “who dey think gonna beat dem Bengals”…. as a lover of grammar it truly offends me). Everyone was Who Dey’ing each other as they passed. 2.5hrs easily flew by – we felt welcomed, excited and ready for the game! And just like that, it was time to enter the stadium.

In the Jungle

Whilst I support the Arizona Cardinals, I do have an ulterior motive for seeing them play Cincinnati beyond them being my husband’s team. And that motive is Joe Burrow. Joe Brrr, Joe Shiesty, Joey B – is always one of the most exciting Quarterbacks to see play. He’s just elite. And smart. And very handsome. Win win win.

As we walked in to the stadium the Bengals ran out for warm up. Seeing Joe Burrow stretch for 20 minutes was a highlight.

The game itself had nothing on the line – my Cardinals had the tied worst record in the league at the time and of course didn’t make the playoffs. The Bengals had Joe Burrow injured and out for half the season so they were also out of playoff contention. Both teams were playing for pride.

It’s no surprise the Bengals won, as the much superior team with Joe playing. It was 37-14 to the Bengals, and most of the Cardinals’ points were scored late when the Bengals were fielding their second team.

What I loved was the atmosphere; there was a band, sellers came around the stands with beer and drinks, the seats were comfy, there were no queues for food and the stadium was simple and easy access (putting Wembley to shame).

We enjoyed the game and stayed right to the end, then headed back to our hotel to watch the later games in the bar. It was so incredible to experience a game in the US.

Even if you’re not an NFL fan, going to the games is so much fun and I’d still recommend experiencing the atmosphere if you’re visiting the US and in to sports. Do you follow the NFL and have you been to a game? Or would you like to go? Let me know in the comments below!

Cincy – you were a blast. WHO DEY!

That’s great you got to see a game there. My late husband was a fair-weather fan, he would call them the bungles when they lost 😂

That made me laugh – the Bungles!! My husband says they are the Cardiac Cats 🙂

I love your enthusiasm for NFL Hannah – a sport I know nothing about. What a great way to spend a few days between Christmas and the New Year.

We are mad but it’s fun to do together and a great excuse to see some places we wouldn’t otherwise 🙂

Wow, what a truly spectacular experience. I salute your spontaneity, especially as for many people travel is a thoroughly scheduled endeavour due to a limited time off and an extensive list of experiences they intend to enjoy. I’ve been to a good few big sports games, and the atmosphere is something I’ll carry with me forever. Thanks for sharing, and have a good day 🙂 Aiva xx

Honestly, you’re more American than I am, as I could care less about American football! 😆 It’s really cool you got to attend an NFL game, and I’m sure the atmosphere was incredible, even more so than watching on TV. Thanks for sharing, Han!

That made me laugh!! We absolutely love the NFL and enjoyed the game live, it was such a cool experience 🙂

I make tipsy bookings far too often haha!

My team is the Lions of course, but I think I have only been to two games. In college we would tailgate before home games and the parents would come with lots of good food and drinks. It was so much fun!

    1. travelling_han Avatar

I absolutely love that!! I’m glad you’ve had a few years of something to cheer after such a terrible run. I could do with the same for the Cardinals!! 🙂

Sounds like so much fun! I’m not a football fan at all, but I can relate to your enthusiasm because it’s how I’d feel while attending a gymnastics championship. So glad it worked out for you guys to come see your teams 😊

Sports events are always so much fun, the atmosphere is always so unique. We had the best time watching our teams 🙂

Decisions made while tipsy can lead to some great adventures. 😉 I loved reading about your time in Ohio, and seeing your photos from such a fun time; and in the US midwest too; wow! Such a fun time, Hannah! Thanks for sharing it with us.

Oh they absolutely can, and we don’t regret this decision at all – it was so much fun!! Thanks so much for stopping by Tricia 🙂

Hey, as long as you aren’t putting yourself in the poorhouse, let those tipsy decisions fly. I’m glad you had so much fun. I was born into a household of rabid Green Bay Packer fans in a state of rabid Green Bay Packer fans. However, I was born with natural immunity. I loathe American football and thus have actively avoided any and all opportunities to see either a Packers (many family members are season ticket holders) or a Minnesota Vikings game. I’m just not a sports person (in terms of watching), but I find American football particularly boring and objectionable. Still, I know I’m in the minority in this country. I hope you (or MTH) change your allegiance to the GB Packers or MN Vikings soon, though, so we can meet up!! 🙂

    1. travelling_han Avatar

Exactly, we are a nightmare when we’re tipsy and planning travel, but you only live once right! I remember saying you’re from a Packers mad household, it’s amazing you stayed immune. Hehe, well hopefully we play them soon and can make a trip 🙂

And of course it really should be the Seahawks but so glad you had fun. I watch more rugby and cricket when I do watch sports, yet an American football day is quite an event.

    1. travelling_han Avatar

We both have a soft spot for the seahawks actually, and did consider coming to see the Cardinals Seahawks – but given how good they are at the moment, it would have been miserable for a Cardinals fan!! 🙂

I love that you are such an avid NFL fan! I not really a fan, but boy do I love being there in the stadium for a game. It doesn’t even matter the team, I just love the energy and being part of it all. Years ago I went to a 49ers game in their old Candlestick Park there in San Fran and it was incredible. Absolutely an unmatched experience. 🙂

    1. travelling_han Avatar

Stadium atmospheres are so cool aren’t they, definitely something to experience at least a few times in life 🙂

  13. WanderingCanadians Avatar

Sounds like you had a blast, even though your team lost. I love that you made an impulse decision to fly to the US while you were tipsy! Sounds like it worked out well!

    1. travelling_han Avatar

Totally, it was a really fun trip 🙂

  14. wetanddustyroads Avatar

Ha, the decisions you make when you’ve had a drink or two – that has happened to us too (and then the plan usually turned out very well) 😁. It seems that was also the case with you guys – what a fun trip! There were times when Berto and I loved going to watch rugby in a stadium – and although it was a bonus when our team won, it was the atmosphere that kept calling us back. Oh, and nice to see MTH in a photo too.

    1. travelling_han Avatar

Welllll exactly, got to be spontaneous sometimes 🙂 Such a fun trip! And aww thanks, it’s a rare appearance but nice to have him here from time to time!

I’ve been to a couple of games in London but would like to experience a game in the US at some point. I’ve adopted the Vikings as my team and have been to their stadium for football (soccer) but would be nice to go to a proper NFL game there sometime 😊. It’s great you got the full experience for your teams.

    1. travelling_han Avatar

I love you’ve picked the Vikings!Hopefully you can make it to an NFL game in the US one day 🙂
